The IKEA Detolf was never a collector-specific product. Collectors adopted it anyway. It was inexpensive, mostly transparent, tall enough for several shelves of figures and visually quiet enough that the collection remained the thing you noticed.
But it was also narrow, relatively shallow and far from rigid. Bump the cabinet and movement travels through the shelves. And because the enclosure is tempered glass, a damaged or failed panel can shatter completely.
Then IKEA discontinued it, and the search for a replacement started.
Price. Depth. Visibility. Weight capacity. Rigidity. Dust control. How it looks in a living room. Whether you can add to it later.
So this is not a ranking. It is eight different trades, plus the obvious ninth option: finding another Detolf second-hand.
One disclosure before we start: we make Moducase, so you should expect us to have a view on modular display systems. But a premium system is not the sensible answer for every collection. If an IKEA cabinet genuinely does the job you need it for, buy the IKEA cabinet.
First, should you buy a used Detolf?
If you searched for Detolf alternatives, there is a reasonable chance what you actually want is another Detolf.
Used ones still circulate through marketplaces and collector groups. If budget is the overriding concern and your pieces are relatively small and light, it can still work.
But remember what you are buying: old tempered glass whose transport and handling history you usually do not know.
Check the edges and corners carefully for chips. Inspect the base and top for moisture damage.
There is also no future product line to grow into. You cannot order another matching unit later, move to a deeper Detolf for a vehicle or know that the next second-hand unit will be in comparable condition.
Retail furniture lines not designed for collectors change. Collections outlive them.
And cheap becomes less attractive when the pieces inside are worth many times more than the cabinet.
Budget dominates the decision and your pieces are small, light and low-value enough that unknown glass history is an acceptable risk.
You want a product line to grow into later, or the pieces inside are already worth meaningfully more than the cabinet.
What the Detolf actually got right
It helps to be precise about what collectors miss.
The Detolf was not exceptional because of its dimensions. It worked because so little of the cabinet got between you and the collection.
Four transparent sides around a thin metal structure meant you saw the pieces rather than the furniture. Several units together still felt visually light.
And it was inexpensive enough that buying three did not feel like starting an interior-design project.
What collectors mostly miss is the price and transparency. The Detolf itself came with real compromises: limited depth and load capacity, very little rigidity, poor dust protection, and the inherent failure mode of tempered glass.
It was also awkward to move, heavy and fragile enough that you wouldn't casually take it to another house, and it never inspired much structural confidence once in place either. If it is not fixed to the wall, a bump can send movement through the whole cabinet. Even secured, it is still a tall glass structure with limited rigidity, which matters when figures stand freely without stands, or the collection includes heavier die-cast pieces and dense statues.
Dust protection was not much better. The Detolf looked enclosed, but it was never sealed. There are large enough gaps around the door and other openings that dust gets in easily, so figures inside still need regular dusting.
Lighting was always an add-on. There is no dedicated cable-management path, so hiding power cables usually means routing them through gaps or improvising a solution around the cabinet.
And then there is the glass itself. Collectors have long reported Detolf panels suddenly shattering, sometimes long after assembly and without an obvious impact immediately beforehand. Whether the cause was a damaged edge, stress from handling, a previous knock, or another failure point, the result is the same: when tempered glass fails, it does not bend or crack gracefully. It breaks completely.
That does not mean every Detolf is waiting to shatter. It means glass introduces a failure mode that acrylic does not.
For a cabinet holding lighter, inexpensive pieces, those trade-offs may be acceptable. Once the pieces inside are worth hundreds or thousands, rigidity, dust protection, load capacity, and what happens when the enclosure is bumped start to matter much more.

Tempered glass doesn't crack. It fails completely.

1. IKEA BLÅLIDEN: the obvious answer that gives up space
BLÅLIDEN occupies roughly the same territory: a narrow glass cabinet that is easy to buy and easy to place.
But it is smaller.
At roughly 35 × 32 × 151 cm (13.8 × 12.6 × 59.5 in), losing a few centimetres of depth matters once a figure has a base, cape, extended arm or weapon. Its published shelf load is also only around 3 kg (7 lb).
The frame is visually heavier too.
If what you liked about the Detolf was how little of it you noticed, BLÅLIDEN moves in the opposite direction.
Your pieces are small and light, budget matters, and you want the simplest answer.
You collect wide 1/6 poses, substantial bases, vehicles or heavier pieces.
2. IKEA BILLY with glass doors: density instead of viewing angles
BILLY solves a different problem.
The common wide version gives you roughly 80 cm of width and substantially higher shelf-load capacity than narrow glass cabinets. You can run it across a wall and put a lot of collection behind glass without moving into specialist display furniture.
What you give up is depth and side visibility.
At around 30 cm deep, with solid sides and back, a BILLY is fundamentally a front-facing display.

Density matters more than viewing angles: smaller figures, boxed collectibles, or collections mixed with books.
You want depth, side visibility, or room for wide poses and vehicles.
3. IKEA RUDSTA: better if you use the back
RUDSTA comes closer to Detolf proportions at roughly 42 × 37 × 155 cm (16.5 × 14.6 × 61 in).
The obvious difference is the solid metal back.
You lose the transparent-through-the-room effect, but gain a magnetic surface for artwork, backgrounds, labels and cable management.
A solid back is not automatically worse. Once you start composing a display rather than filling shelves, the background becomes part of the presentation.
You're happy to compose against a solid back, artwork or labels rather than see straight through the case.
The disappearing-glass-box look was the whole appeal of the Detolf for you.
4. IKEA MILSBO: the wide IKEA upgrade
MILSBO starts giving you enough width to compose a shelf instead of simply fill one.
At roughly 73 × 42 × 175 cm (28.7 × 16.5 × 68.9 in), the depth improves only modestly over a Detolf. The width changes much more.
Two characters can face each other. A group can spread across the shelf. You can leave negative space rather than filling every centimetre.
For standard standing 1/6 figures, MILSBO can be a sensible step up.
You want wider group displays with negative space, and 42 cm of depth covers what you collect.
You're building toward vehicles, dioramas, or wide bases that need more depth.
5. IKEA FÄRJKARL: the IKEA option worth watching
FÄRJKARL is particularly interesting if you want to stay with IKEA but need more usable space.
At roughly 87 × 44.5 × 161 cm (34.4 × 17.5 × 63.4 in), it gives you substantially more width than a Detolf and a little more depth than MILSBO.
That is enough to make group displays much easier.
The solid back and more furniture-like frame mean it does not disappear visually in the way a Detolf did.
You want more width and depth than MILSBO while staying inside conventional furniture.
You collect heavy resin pieces and haven't confirmed the shelf-load specification in your market.
6. Garage shelving conversions: cheap structure, expensive finish
Steel garage shelving appears constantly in serious figure and statue collections for a good reason.
It gives you large dimensions and high static load capacity for relatively little money.
But two things are easy to underestimate.
First, the rack price is not the finished-display price. If you want dust protection and something that belongs in a living room, you may need acrylic fronts, side panels, a back, lighting, cable management, seals, hardware, trim and shelf finishing.
Garage shelving is inexpensive. A finished enclosed display built around garage shelving may not be.
The front enclosure is usually where the DIY solution starts getting complicated. A common approach is to cut individual acrylic panels for each bay and hold them in place with magnetic tape or adhesive strips. It works, but the tape becomes another failure point, and every panel has to stay aligned well enough to keep the gaps under control.
The alternative is one large sheet of acrylic covering several bays at once. That removes the seams, but the panel is heavier and more awkward to remove whenever you want to clean, rearrange or add pieces, and it won't grow with the collection the way individual panels can.
The rack itself may be modular. The enclosure you build around it often isn't.
And the acrylic is only the beginning. A finished rack still needs the back, side panels, lighting, cable management and dust gaps solved, and good clear acrylic is not cheap once you're covering several large openings.
This is also where many DIY builds stall: the rack goes up, the figures go in, and the immediate problem is solved. Finishing the last 20% means more time and money on something that already technically works, so cables stay visible, the back stays open, and the rack never quite becomes the display you first pictured.
The second issue is rigidity. A rack can be rated to carry hundreds of kilograms vertically and still move laterally when somebody bumps it.
Load capacity and rigidity are not the same thing.
That is what catches people out when several shelves are full of figures standing without supports. A knock can travel through the entire structure. Bracing or anchoring the rack can reduce that movement, but that becomes another part of the build.
So racks remain an excellent answer when heavy pieces and budget are the priority. Just compare the completed display, not the price tag on the bare shelving.
Heavy pieces and raw capacity are the priority, and you're willing to finish the enclosure yourself.
You want a finished look without a second project: panels, lighting, cable management and bracing all still need solving.
7. Custom cabinetry: when the room matters more than modularity
Built-in cabinetry can be the best-looking solution here.
It can run wall to wall, work around awkward architecture, hide lighting and cables, and create compartments around specific statement pieces.
The problem is rigidity of a different kind: not whether it moves, but if it can change.
A 1/6 collector buys a quarter-scale statue. Then a vehicle. Then a diorama needing more depth. Or moves house. Bye furniture.
It is also by far the most expensive solution.
The room is permanent and you're confident the collection's shape won't change much.
You're still buying pieces that could change what the display needs to do.
8. Modular display systems: when you stop buying cabinets
This is our category, so read this section with that disclosure in mind.
The point is not that every collector needs Moducase.
The shift happens when the questions change.
At some point you stop shopping for a cabinet and start planning a display system.
Can it run across the whole wall? Turn the corner? Take a deeper vehicle case later? Can the layout change? Can several modules read as one installation? Can a scene continue across them? Are the light cables manageable and can they be easily hidden?
Those are no longer questions about one cabinet.
Our Sixth, DF and MAX families give different depths as the collection moves from standing figures into dynamic poses, vehicles, statues and dioramas. Adjoining cases can also share an open interior, allowing one composition to continue across several modules.
There is another difference that becomes obvious once a display gets large: structure. Moducases use aluminium frames, and multiple cases connect together both sideways and up into a larger structure, with the panels sitting inside that frame instead of being the structure themselves. That makes the display much more resistant to everyday knocks than a tall narrow glass cabinet or an open rack.
Acrylic also behaves differently from glass. It can flex rather than shatter into fragments, which matters in rooms with children, pets or simply a lot of expensive pieces. We cover the material differences properly in our acrylic vs glass guide.
The disadvantage is straightforward: cost. This is several times IKEA money and should only become the answer once the collection creates the problem it solves.
You're planning a wall or system that needs to grow, change, or absorb deeper pieces later.
Your collection is small and settled, and a retail cabinet already does the job. Look at MILSBO or FÄRJKARL instead.
Why depth is the dimension collectors underestimate
A common sizing mistake is measuring only height.
A figure is 30 cm tall, so you find more than 30 cm of clearance. Done.
Except the figure also has a base, pose, arms, weapons, cape, flight stand or scenery. Standing figures hide the problem because shallow cabinets work well while everything remains upright.
Then the first deep piece arrives: a diorama, a wide base, a vehicle, a flight pose. Suddenly every cabinet you already own is a few centimetres too shallow.
That does not mean buying the deepest case available. It means sizing for where the collection is going, not only what fits today.

The display ladder
Most collectors do not jump directly from an open shelf to a full display wall.
They move through roughly this progression:
- A few pieces: open shelf, used Detolf or BLÅLIDEN.
- Growing smaller collection: BILLY, RUDSTA, MILSBO or FÄRJKARL.
- Large 1/6 collection: width and wall efficiency start mattering more.
- Heavy statues: load capacity and rigidity become critical.
- Vehicles and dioramas: depth starts deciding the purchase.
- Dedicated room: you are planning walls, corners, sightlines and lighting rather than individual cabinets.
Most collectors climb this ladder without noticing, which is why so many collection rooms end up with three incompatible display solutions.
Everything side by side
We use relative cost rather than one currency because prices, taxes and availability vary by market. More importantly, the purchase price is not always the cost of getting the display finished.

So what should you actually buy?
Every section above already makes the case for one option over another, so the short version is this: buy the cheapest thing that solves today's problem, but don't buy the thing that solves today's problem and closes the door on tomorrow's.
The mistake worth avoiding is not buying the wrong cabinet. It is buying the right cabinet for the collection you had two years ago.
