The LEGO Bonsai Tree stands under 20cm in every direction. The UCS Millennium Falcon runs about 84cm long. Both are "LEGO sets," and the gap between them is the whole problem with sizing a case. A case built for one looks absurd around the other, and a set wedged into a case a centimetre too small can't come out again without pulling bricks apart.
We get asked which case fits which set constantly, so here's how to size one properly, and how to plan for the sets you don't own yet.
Why LEGO sizing is harder than it looks
Most collector categories have predictable proportions. 1/6 figures cluster around 30–36cm tall. Statues follow standard base conventions. LEGO does none of that. Sets run from a few hundred pieces to over nine thousand, and the physical footprint scales with the geometry of the build, not just the piece count.
A case that fits the Empire State Building set, tall and narrow, is the wrong shape entirely for a Grand Piano, which is low but wide and deep. The Botanical range is small and delicate. A UCS ship is long and low. There is no single "LEGO case," which is exactly why the DF line comes in four shapes rather than one.
The trap most collectors fall into is sizing a case to the set's own dimensions. A case with interior clearance that matches the build exactly leaves no room to lift the set in and out, and for a large UCS set, forcing it past a tight opening is how studs pop and sections separate. You're sizing for the set plus the room to handle it, not the set alone.
The three measurements that decide the case
Before you look at any case, measure your set three ways, and be honest about where the collection is heading, not just what's on the shelf today.
Footprint (length × depth). This is what rules most LEGO sets in or out. Measure the baseplate and anything that overhangs it. Modular Buildings sit on a 32×32-stud base, about 26cm square, so a row of them adds up fast. UCS vehicles are the opposite problem: narrow from the front but long, and often displayed at an angle to show detail, which needs more depth than the set's own footprint suggests.
Depth for minifigures. If you line minifigures up in front of the set, and most collectors do, add their projection to the set's depth. A shallow case that fits the build alone won't fit the build plus a front row.
Height, including the base and headroom. Leave clearance above the tallest point so the set clears the frame going in and coming out. Tall architectural builds and stacked-shelf displays are where height, not footprint, becomes the deciding dimension.
The DF line, by set
The DF family is the one we point LEGO collectors to. Four sizes, one footprint system, all built from the same optically neutral acrylic and the same dust-sealing frame. They share the DF connection standard, so they stack and sit together as the collection grows. The dimensions below are the external case size, length × depth × height.

Two limits worth naming. A handful of record-size sets sit outside any single case, the Titanic runs about 135cm long and the Eiffel Tower about 149cm tall, both beyond a single DF, so those become a two-case or dedicated-shelf conversation. And clearance is already built into these external dimensions, so measure your build against the interior room rather than the outside of the case. When in doubt, size up.
Planning for the next set
The strongest LEGO display strategy is modular by design: start with the case your current centrepiece needs, then add to it. DF cases connect and stack within the DF family, up to four units, with taller stacks secured for stability, so you can grow a column or a row without replacing what you already own. The one rule to remember is that families connect to their own kind: a DF joins a DF, not a Max.
Weight is rarely the constraint with LEGO, but it's worth knowing the numbers. A standard DF holds up to 15kg, and the enhancement upgrade takes that to 30kg, comfortably beyond even a large UCS set on its baseplate. If you want to display a set on top of the case as well, the DF top board is a separate accessory rated to 15kg.
Two more planning notes. Spotlights can mount on either the top panel or the base, so you can light a tall build from above or wash a wide one from below. And because each case is made to order, the case you add in two years is built to the same spec as the first, so the row stays consistent instead of becoming a patchwork.
The short version
Measure footprint first, then depth with your minifigures, then height with headroom. Match the shape to the set: DF30 for shallow, DF60 for most, DF120 for long, DF130 for tall. Leave clearance so the set comes out as easily as it went in. And buy into the DF system rather than a single case, so the wall can grow one set at a time.
